EAA: New Rules, New Opportunities for VARs

EAA: New Rules, New Opportunities for VARs

If you’re a value-added reseller (VAR) working in the EU, there’s a major change on the horizon that could impact your customers and open new markets for you. The European Accessibility Act (EAA), a directive set to harmonize accessibility standards across EU member states, is designed to remove market barriers and make products and services more accessible for people with disabilities and the elderly.

While the EAA is first and foremost about inclusion, it’s also a signal for businesses to adapt, innovate, and grow, particularly in industries where accessibility is becoming a non-negotiable requirement.

What is the European Accessibility Act?

The EAA establishes common rules on accessibility across all EU countries, replacing the patchwork of national requirements that currently make cross-border business more complex.

For businesses — including resellers — that means:

  • Reduced compliance costs thanks to one set of rules across the EU.

  • Simplified cross-border trade, opening up larger customer bases.

  • More market opportunities for accessible products and services.

For end-users, it means more choice, better prices, and fewer barriers when it comes to transport, education, employment, and digital access.

Who Will It Affect?

The European Accessibility Act focuses on products and services that are both essential to accessibility and likely to have inconsistent regulations across EU member states. This includes hardware, software, and services in areas such as:

  • Computers and operating systems

  • Smartphones and telephony services

  • Self-service terminals like ATMs, ticketing, and check-in machines

  • Banking and e-commerce platforms

  • Audio-visual equipment and media services

  • Passenger transport services

  • E-books and digital learning platforms

For VARs, this means a broad range of technology solutions could be impacted, creating both compliance challenges and growth opportunities.

Verticals to Watch

The European Accessibility Act will affect nearly every technology vertical BlueStar supports. Here’s where VARs can expect the most demand,  and where specialization can set you apart:

  • Retail – Point-of-sale systems, self-checkouts, and digital displays will require accessible navigation, tactile interfaces, and inclusive design for all shoppers.

  • Hospitality – Reservation systems, self-check-in kiosks, and in-room control devices will need to be fully usable by guests with disabilities.

  • Self-Service – Ticketing machines, ATMs, and information kiosks must incorporate features like voice guidance, braille, and adjustable heights.

  • Digital Signage – Public and commercial displays must present information with high contrast, clear fonts, and alternative formats for users with visual or hearing impairments.

  • Healthcare – Patient portals, telemedicine platforms, and medical kiosks will require accessible interfaces to ensure equitable care delivery.

  • Warehouse & Logistics – Mobile scanners, warehouse management systems, and device interfaces must be adaptable for employees with varying needs.

  • Security – Access control systems, alarm panels, and monitoring software will need an inclusive design for both end-users and operators.

  • RFID & Mobility – Handheld computers, tablets, and smartphones must meet accessibility standards in hardware and operating systems.

What VARs Should Do Now

  1. Audit your current portfolio — Identify which products or solutions you sell that fall under the EAA’s covered categories.

  2. Engage with vendors — Ensure your partners are already working toward compliance. Early adopters will have a competitive edge.

  3. Educate your customers — Position yourself as a trusted advisor on compliance, helping them navigate both regulatory requirements and implementation.

  4. Expand your offering — Look for new vendor relationships or complementary services to address the accessibility gap.

The Bottom Line

The European Accessibility Act isn’t just about legal compliance;  it’s about future-proofing your business. VARs who act now will be well-positioned to not only meet customer needs but to lead the market in delivering accessible, inclusive technology solutions.

Staying informed and proactive will ensure you’re not just reacting to change, but  you’re capitalizing on it.
