The BlueStar Differenceby Marta Grau
Hi, I’m Marta, and while I’m based in Sabadell, an industrial-root town in Catalonia, I often find myself drawn to the energy of Barcelona, just a short train ride away. Sabadell has always been home, but Barcelona, with its vibrant streets, history, and cultural richness, is where I go when I need a change of history and culture. I want to share with you not just the well-known attractions but the personal experiences and hidden gems that make both Sabadell and Barcelona so special.
Living in Sabadell, I’m immersed in a quieter, more local experience compared to the hustle and bustle of Barcelona. There’s a peace here that’s hard to describe, from the tree-lined streets to the rich history that echoes through the town. Sabadell is an industrial town, yet it still holds on to its Catalan roots. Walking around the town center, you can see traces of the past in the architecture, from old factories to historic buildings. I love how the history suddenly hits you, showing up in buildings full of heritage hidden among the new and, too often, eye-sores, creating a sense of being part of the old city memories, that are comforting and familiar.
One of my favorite places in Sabadell, a part of the city center, is Parc de Catalunya, where I often go for a quiet walk or to simply enjoy nature. It’s a great spot for some downtime, far from the crowds. There’s also a sense of community here, where you’ll often find locals gathering in the squares, chatting over coffee, or enjoying a casual meal at one of the many local restaurants. When I want to run or go cycling, I always head to El Rodal, a beautiful area of fields and forests that surrounds the city along the rill. This natural haven is an inseparable part of Sabadell’s environment and holds great ecological value. It truly feels like a little oasis of nature.
Though Sabadell is my base, Barcelona is never far away, and it’s a city I find myself visiting often. What I love about Barcelona is the way it pulls you in. The first time you see La Sagrada Familia, it’s hard not to be awe-struck. The architecture, the grandeur—it’s everything you’ve seen in pictures and more. But there’s so much more to Barcelona than just the tourist spots.
Montjuïc offers a stunning view of the city and the sea, while the Gothic Quarter invites you to wander through its winding streets, as if stepping back in time. There’s something magical about Barcelona’s energy—it’s vibrant, diverse, and always alive with possibility. And when I need a break from the city, I head to Collserola or Delta del Llobregat, areas just outside the city where nature and calm reign.
Despite its global fame, Barcelona has many hidden gems that only locals truly appreciate. For example, if you’re looking for a spot to enjoy live music, Sala Razzmatazz is where the music scene really comes alive. And if you’re in search of quiet beauty, I recommend the Santa Maria del Mar church, especially during a classical concert.
Of course, Barcelona’s food scene is legendary. From pa amb tomàquet (simple bread rubbed with tomato and drizzled with olive oil) to butifarra amb mongetes (a classic Catalan sausage dish), every dish tells a story. I love bringing friends to Nou Celler (on Carrer Princesa), a cozy restaurant where you can savor the best of Catalan cuisine in a relaxed, authentic atmosphere.
One of the best parts of living in Catalonia is the festivals. Les Festes de la Mercè in Barcelona is an absolute must. The city transforms into a celebration of music, fireworks, and parades, and it’s a joy to be part of. But it’s the small, local traditions that I hold most dear, like the joy of Tió de Nadal at Christmas or the summer bonfires on St. John’s Eve. These moments bring people together in ways you can’t quite explain until you’ve experienced them.
If you’re visiting Barcelona or Sabadell for the first time, my advice is simple: take your time. In both places, it’s not just about seeing the sights but really experiencing the life around you. In Sabadell, stroll through the parks or sit in a café and watch the world go by. In Barcelona, get lost in the winding streets of the Gothic Quarter, or enjoy a slow meal at a terrace café in El Born. Both cities have a way of making you feel at home if you just let them.
To me, Sabadell and Barcelona are welcoming. Sabadell is my quiet home, my sanctuary, while Barcelona is the city that never stops giving. Both places have a rich history, a beautiful culture, and a unique way of making you feel connected to their story.
Whether you’re visiting Sabadell for a quick trip to our BlueStar office or exploring the sights of Barcelona, I hope you take a moment to embrace the local rhythm. You’ll find that in both places, there’s always something new to discover, and always a reason to come back.
