Wearable Devices Paving the Way in Hospitals

Region by region, countries, and governing bodies are entering back into lockdowns to help stop the spread of the virus and in this response, many are wondering how they can keep themselves safe, and monitor for any irregularities or upticks in symptom’s severity. Now more than ever remote patient monitoring is relevant. From nationwide lockdowns to restrictions against social gatherings and non-essential travel, many European countries are doing their best to tackle the pandemic on their own timeline. With the virus flaring up in many regions and healthcare staff members running short, there is much that wearable devices can do to help halt the spread.

What are Wearable Devices?

Wearable Devices can monitor patients’ chronic conditions, track sleep/wake cycles, and remind patients to take their medicine and eat on a regularly patterned schedule. All of the data that’s collected from these devices can then be converted into actionable input to help make those decisions on how to advise patients, especially when it comes to chronic diseases, or perhaps in our situation, the COVID-19 Pandemic. Wearable technology performs quite a substantial role in the detection of COVID-19 symptoms to assist patients infected by this novel virus. The three most common symptoms of infection are respiratory distress/difficulty, fever, and coughing and the person who is infected by this virus has a respiratory rate (RR) ≥ 20 breaths/min (bpm), body temperature ≥ 38 °C, (iv) pulse rate > 100 beats/min in general. The usage of such wearable sensors and devices proves valuable to the necessary assessment, monitoring, and evaluation of such parameters.

Whether it serves as a consumer-grade wristwatch or a varying monitor, these devices are able to utilize an electronic sensor to collect valuable health stats by tracking and tracing vital signs to predict early-on symptoms, before actually exhibiting a violent fever or any aggressive body aches. In a more public manner, wearable devices can monitor the location of a person in proximity to another; doctors and healthcare staff can track their patients to ensure they are keeping clear of crowds and public gatherings. Take contact tracing tactics for example, as tracing and warning apps can break the chain of coronavirus infections, nationally and across borders by monitoring a patient’s whereabouts before and after their infection. Though this strategy has been deemed useful for many, a surge of new cases has been unveiled due to this new understanding.

If one can manage positively corral the dispersal of wearable devices, encouraging loyalty to their usage, many will hopefully consider the importance of monitoring their vitals, such as any changing body temperatures and loss of senses. As smartphones and smartwatches are very common consumer devices nowadays, they can help immensely to monitor this novel virus and hopefully do away with certain tendencies.
