Is it time to move to mPOS? October 18th, 2018

Is it time to move to mPOS?

Sitting in between an old-fashioned cash register and a full ePOS (Electronic Point of Sale) system, mPOS (Mobile Point of Sale) technology creates a fully mobile solution that offers huge flexibility to businesses of all sizes.

Why is mPOS so revolutionary? Well, to start with most people already have a smartphone and usually a tablet too. This means that almost everyone already has the tools to implement an mPOS solution – removing the need to invest in an ePOS terminal.

It’s worth pointing out that Android and iOS are leading the way when it comes to mPOS, but Windows alternatives are being worked on and some solutions are available for Windows users.

The mPOS market has really taken off since the introduction of ‘ready to go’ mobile credit card reader devices. These readers can be linked via Bluetooth to a mobile phone or tablet. Devices from Izettle, SumUp and Payleven are able to link directly to a bank account when receiving payment, while PayPal also offers a device that connects to a PayPal account.

The great thing about mobile card readers is that transactions are controlled by an app downloaded to the mobile device (SDKs are available for software integration). The only requirement is that the mobile device has a 3G/4G or Wi-Fi connection.

What’s more, there are no monthly or other ongoing costs, it’s just a one-off purchase and the average RRP is €80.

So that’s how mPOS works, but who will it work for?

Well, with off-the-shelf bundles available as well as custom set ups, the potential for mPOS is almost limitless.

mPOS naturally lends itself to mobile deployment, be this on a doorstep, during a delivery, out on the street and so on.

But while it is unlikely to replace ePOS in major high street stores, it could play a role in queue busting or floating sales within a store. It’s all about giving users the flexibility to maximise their sales and make it an easy process for their customers.

Consider this: all your customers need to get up and running with a mPOS solution is a mobile device, a payment device, a portable printer and some rolls of receipt paper. And that’s it! With this bundle (along with the 3G/4G or Wi-Fi connection) you can take payment and give receipts from anywhere.

It’s a perfect set up for many users, including:

  • Mobile mechanics
  • Hairdressers
  • Takeaway delivery
  • Gardeners
  • Taxi drivers
  • Tradesmen
  • Cleaners
  • And many more.
