Hands-Free Solutions for a Safer Logistic Environment

The statement “COVID-19 has drastically changed our lives” is an understatement to say the least. Several countries have moved toward a total lockdown of their economic standing, with massive restrictions for people’s movement, and to help stop the spread of this novel pandemic. Many vertical markets have been severely affected by this shutdown and have had to “get creative” with their strategies to effectively fulfill the need and answer the demand of the end-user. Several have been forced to stay in their homes and online sales have shown an uptick in popularity, pushing fulfillment and distribution centers to embrace a larger challenge: meeting delivery expectations, no matter the implications.

Of course, social distancing measures are to be followed in the general public, but also within the workplace to help mitigate the virus’s risk. Maintaining a clean and sanitized workplace is also of utmost importance as well to provide a safer environment for the employees on staff. Many warehouses are still stocked full with human employees, so those machines, equipment articles, and devices and coming into contact with so many hands in just one shift. Proper sanitization and disinfection processes must be scheduled to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

A different alternative that has been introduced is the usage of hands-free solutions for SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) identification and process tracking, through two main systems: Person-to-Goods (PTG) and Goods-to-Person (GTP). Person-to-Goods is a fulfillment method where operators are supposed to move and reach dedicated areas of the warehouse, to populate their list, article by article, physically picking all the items out to finalize the task. The Goods to Person strategy is used when an operator prepares the order in his working space and the goods are coming to him through a material handling system, look at automation for example.

The benefit of adopting hands-free solutions means that these interactions are completely contactless, since the goods are read on the fly, while the order is being fulfilled. Taking “handheld” out of the description makes operations much safer in nature, while also removing cables and cradles, so they no longer have to be fumbled with. Every hands-free positioning can be adjusted according to the operators’ needs, so barcodes can be best read and understood. Datalogic’s range of hands-free image-based barcode readers is able to assist with simplifying warehouse operations, while also keeping a safe distance in mind for their employees.
