As Hungary’s capital, it’s packed with history, culture, and plenty of things to see, do, and—most importantly—eat. Whether you're visiting for a weekend or planning to stay longer, let me give you the inside scoop on what makes this place special.

What Budapest Is Known For

Budapest is famous for its breathtaking architecture, historic landmarks, and, of course, its thermal baths. The city is divided by the Danube River, with Buda on one side, known for its hills and castles, and Pest on the other, bustling with energy, nightlife, and great restaurants. It’s a city where history meets modern fun—where you can admire grand historical sites during the day and sip a cocktail in a ruin pub at night.

My Favorite Thing About Living Here

Two words: convenience and fun. Public transportation is affordable and reliable, making it easy to explore every corner of the city without breaking the bank. And no matter what you’re in the mood for—a fancy dinner, a casual pub, or a hidden gem of a café—you’ll find something great just around the corner. Spring through autumn is the best time to experience the city at its liveliest, but if you don’t mind bundling up, winter has its own charm, especially with the Christmas market.

Must-See Attractions

There’s no shortage of breathtaking sights, but if I had to narrow it down, these are my top picks:

• Buda Castle – Sitting high on Castle Hill, this royal palace offers stunning views and houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum.
• Parliament Building – One of the most magnificent buildings in Europe, right on the Danube.
• Fisherman’s Bastion – A fairy-tale-like lookout with panoramic views of the city.
• St. Stephen’s Basilica – A grand church with impressive architecture and a chance to see the mummified hand of Hungary’s first king (yes, really!).
• Heroes' Square – A grand square celebrating Hungary’s most important national leaders.

Hidden Gems Off the Beaten Path

If you want to go beyond the usual tourist spots, here are some of my favorite lesser-known places:

• ELTE Füvészkert (Botanical Garden) – A peaceful retreat in the city with exotic plants and historic charm.
• Zugliget Chairlift – Instead of hiking, take this scenic ride for an incredible city view.
• Children’s Railway – A train run by kids (yes, you read that right) that takes you through the Buda Hills.

Food & Drink: What to Try and Where to Go

Hungarian food is hearty, rich, and absolutely delicious. Here’s what you must try:

• Hortobágyi Crepe – A savory crepe filled with meat and covered in a creamy paprika sauce.

Beyond Budapest: Day Trips and Local Traditions

One of the best times to visit is during the Budapest Christmas Market, which transforms the city into a festive wonderland with handcrafted gifts, mulled wine, and traditional treats.

And while Budapest is amazing, don’t just stay in the city—venture out! Lake Balaton, especially the Badacsony region, is one of the most beautiful places in Hungary. It’s my personal getaway spot, perfect for relaxation and wine tasting.
