Driving innovation in London’s black cabs

In cooperation with iZettle, BlueStar provides taxi payment solutions for black cabs in London to help drivers comply with recent regulations.

Since 31 October 2016, taxi drivers must demonstrate that they have the ability to accept card and contactless payments and provide receipts for those payments upon request. This could be via a handheld device, mobile solution or a device fitted in the passenger compartment of the taxi.

Any taxi found not to meet the requirements will be issued with an unfit notice, which will remain in place until the requirement is fulfilled and the vehicle is presented for inspection.

The move was part of Mayor Sadiq Khan's Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan, which aims to make life easier for passengers, improve safety and ensure London has a world-class taxi and private hire market.

The changes have meant that hailing one of London's famous black cabs will no longer mean customers have to ensure they have enough cash on them, or need to stop at an ATM. The new rules aim to make travelling by taxi easier, but drivers have to ensure they are able to offer the full service.

Many of London's black taxis have accepted cards for years, but cash has remained the standard form of payment. Now, all taxis will have to carry a card payment device, ending uncertainty for customers about how they will be able to pay.

To comply with these rules, taxi drivers need to demonstrate the following:

  • The driver must have the ability to accept card and contactless payments
  • The taxi must be displaying Tfl's card and contactless payment signage stickers in the correct position
  • If the upgrade has not yet been carried out, the driver can also provide written evidence that the taxi is booked in to have a device (or cradle for a handheld device) fitted in the passenger compartment of the taxi.
